FERTINAGRO BIOTECH PATENTS A TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL HELP FIX NITROGEN IN THE SOIL

release time:2020-09-23

Fertinagro Biotech, the leading company in plant nutrition in Spain, has just received the granting of a new European patent that consists of a fertilizer technology for microbial stimulation that enhances the biological fixation of nitrogen in the soil. This patented technology offers am alternative nutritional solutions by reducing the amount of conventional nitrogen fertilizers required for crop nutrition, consequently, reducing environmental costs and helping to make agriculture more sustainable.

And with it, there are already more than 40 patents obtained by the company both nationally and internationally.

The nitrogen is an essential element for the development of a plant and used as fertilizer (chemical or organic) for hundreds of years. The disproportionate use of this element as fertilizer is today a great ecological problem. Nitrogen is a very reactive element in the soil and has a strong tendency to be lost in the form of nitrate or nitrogen oxides when it is applied in an uncontrolled way. This generates important pollution flows into the underground waters and the atmosphere. The creation of products that promote an efficient use of nitrogen by crops is an essential milestone to achieve a sustainable agriculture.

The deterioration of the soil microbiota due to the excessive use of conventional fertilizers and other agricultural factors, has caused that there are more and more agricultural soils with reduced amounts of bacteria and therefore less nitrogen available for crops, causing a significant reduction in productivity.

The application of this technology will reduce the total amount of nitrogen used as fertilizer without reducing the capacity of the crop to generate harvest. In this way, the application of this technology will have an economic impact, due to the increased efficiency of the products that contain it, and a strong environmental impact due to the reduction of the fertilizer units necessary to nourish the crop, a key objective in the new European strategy“Farm to Fork” .

This fertilizer composition not only facilitates the development and growth of plants, but also constitutes a treatment for the soil, more specifically for the microorganisms present in it, reducing the need to nourish it with nitrogen fertilizers.

Thanks to this technology, which can be applied to nutritional solutions for both fertigation and granules enhancing the natural resources, a reduction in the non-renewable energy used for convert nitrogen into assimilable forms such as ammonium, nitrites or nitrates. All this will contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of the agricultural activity itself, a reduction in costs for the farmer and a reduction in the environmental cost.
