Fertilizer importing and exporting situation in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is a net importer of fertilizers, being a net importer of nitrogen fertilizers and a net exporter of mixed fertilizers

▪ Kazphosphate and Kazazot produce about 96% of all fertilizers in Kazakhstan.

▪ Kazakhstan’s exports are concentrated in the neighboring countries: Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, etc.

▪ In 2022, the average import price of fertilizers exceeded the average export price of Kazakhstan’s fertilizers, except for nitrogen fertilizers.

▪ Fertilizer consumption in Kazakhstan has significantly increased over the last years, reaching 313k tonnes in 2021. However, fertilizer consumption is still low compared to other countries in terms of kg per ha, accounting for 4.4 kg per ha in 2021.


EXPORTS

In 2022, Kazakhstan exported $177M in Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers, making it the 31st largest exporter of Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers in the world. At the same year, Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers was the 35th most exported product in Kazakhstan. The main destination of Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers exports from Kazakhstan are: Uzbekistan ($58.9M), Russia ($52.1M), Afghanistan ($12.8M), Ukraine ($7.9M), and Poland ($6.87M).


The fastest growing export markets for Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers of Kazakhstan between 2021 and 2022 were Uzbekistan ($26.4M), Russia ($18.1M), and Afghanistan ($9.36M).


IMPORTS

In 2022, Kazakhstan imported $76.8M in Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers, becoming the 76th largest importer of Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers in the world. At the same year, Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers was the 174th most imported product in Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan imports Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers primarily from: Russia ($64.7M), Spain ($2.99M), Lithuania ($1.89M), Netherlands ($1.03M), and Germany ($901k).


The fastest growing import markets in Mixed Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers for Kazakhstan between 2021 and 2022 were Spain ($1.5M), United States ($601k), and Lithuania ($565k).
