The fertilizer industry is taking decisive action to address global water security challenges while ensuring sustainable agricultural production. With approximately 70% of global freshwater withdrawals currently used for agriculture, the industry is implementing innovative solutions to optimise water usage across the agricultural value chain.
“The fertilizer industry recognises that water security and food security are interlinked. The industry advocates for the efficient use of fertilizers and water resources with appropriate integrated, synchronised management systems that contribute to reduce the water footprint of food crops, and increase economic well-being, environmental protection and climate mitigation and adaptation” said Alzbeta Klein, CEO/Director General of the International Fertilizer Association.
Production site improvements:
Fertilizer companies have achieved remarkable results in water conservation, with some facilities operating with up to 87% recycled water and others achieving zero freshwater withdrawals from water-stressed areas.
Agricultural solutions?:
The industry promotes synchronized nutrient and water management strategies, implementing advanced technologies such as fertigation and precision farming systems to maximize resource efficiency.
