Vietnam’s imports of fertilizers reached US$173.90 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a significant increase of 9.64 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$749.49 million.
China drives growth, while Russia and Laos see minor dips:
China remained the primary source for fertilizer imports, with a May value of US$64.08 million. This signifies a strong increase of 31.10 percent from April and accounts for a dominant 34.28 percent of the total year-to-date imports. Russia and Laos, also key suppliers, experienced minor declines of 7.26 percent and 6.15 percent respectively, in May.
Canada and Philippines show extraordinary month-on-month surges:
Several countries exhibited remarkable month-on-month growth in May:
·Canada recorded an astonishing surge of 16104.40 percent, albeit from a very low base in April, reaching US$11.09 million. This indicates a significant, potentially one-off, shipment.
·Philippines imports jumped by 2161.40 percent, reaching US$4.07 million, also from a low base.
·Taiwan imports increased by 147.86 percent.
·Norway saw a substantial rise of 63.23 percent.
·Belarus emerged as a new significant supplier with imports in May after none in April, valued at US$8.49 million.
South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia face sharp declines:
Conversely, some major suppliers faced substantial declines:
·South Korea imports plummeted by 67.51 percent.
·Indonesia imports decreased by 58.54 percent.
·Malaysia imports fell by 42.85 percent.
·USA imports also saw a decline of 41.81 percent.
The overall increase in May’s fertilizer imports suggests a growing demand in Vietnam, driven strongly by imports from China and significant, albeit volatile, contributions from new or resurgent suppliers like Canada, Philippines, and Belarus.
